And Again

Many birds at Hager Land this morning.  I was greeted by a ruby-crowned kinglet

I heard, but could not spot, several brown creepers.  But plenty of ducks, mostly wood ducks.

I spotted a golden-crowned kinglet on my way out of the woods

And a dozen or so junco's back in the parking lot

Hager Land Again

Took Lori and the scope to Hagar Land on Saturday.  Got a 60x look at many wood ducks and one pileated.

Earlier in the week we saw some nice birds on our turtle walks - a golden-crowned kinglet one day and a yellow rump, in its subdued fall wardrobe, the next.

Hager Land

The Boxborough Library and Hager Land were hopping this morning.   Great views of Palm Warblers and White-throated Sparrows in the parking lot.

Then Wood Ducks, Mallards, and two Black Ducks and I think.  Also there were some small birds that I couldn't ID. Maybe juvenile Green-winged Teals, but I'm not sure.  They were small, with black beaks that seem relatively long.  No real colors though.

Also, a great look at a Belted Kingfisher.

Boxborough Birders

Went on several walks with the Boxborough Birders over the last month at Fruitlands, Barret's Mill, and yesterday, at Jenks.  Not a ton of birds, but Black and White and Common Yellowthroats were seen in most of these walks, as well as some other quick outings.

At Jenks, we decided the Black and White was a female, because the breast was pretty plain (rather than starkly black and white).  Something like the picture below, which the photographer guessed was a juvenile, for the same basic reason.

Below is the male for comparison.

The other thing I learned yesterday was that you can differentiate male and female red bellied woodpeckers by how far the red extends forward.
